Overview

The Patient Safety Technician (PST) plays a vital role in supporting patient care by providing continuous, in-person observation for individuals who require close monitoring due to medical or behavioral needs. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals interested in starting a career in healthcare and making a meaningful impact on patient safety and well-being.

 

Work Environment:

  • Hospital or clinical setting.
  • Shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays depending on patient needs.

New employees must be willing to be vaccinated if found non-immune to measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and chicken pox (varicella) and/or without evidence of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. If you are selected for this position, you will be asked to supply your immunization records as proof of vaccination. If you and have any concerns about receiving these vaccines, medical and/or religious exemptions can be further discussed with Human Resources.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct, one-on-one observation of patients at risk of harming themselves or interfering with medical equipment such as IV lines, feeding tubes, or catheters.
  • Monitor and report changes in patient behavior, mood, or physical condition to nursing staff promptly.
  • Offer compassionate support and reassurance to patients experiencing confusion, agitation, or emotional distress.
  • Ensure a safe and calm environment by following established protocols and maintaining situational awareness.
  • Collaborate with nursing and clinical teams to support patient care plans and safety measures.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold patient dignity at all times.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • No prior healthcare experience necessary; on-the-job training provided.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain attentive and responsive for extended periods.
  • Commitment to patient safety and compassionate care.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire; training provided through Children’s Mercy.De-escalation training provided through Children’s Mercy.

Starting Pay

Our pay ranges are market competitive. The pay range for this job begins at $18.54/hr, but your offer will be determined based on your education and experience.

 

 

Remote Work/Work from Home

This position is not eligible to work remotely, which means that the person hired will be required to work onsite at one of our Children’s Mercy locations and may not work from home.
