Children’s Mercy Comprehensive Epilepsy Center has been designated by the NAEC as a level IV center, recognized as providing care to patients with complex and drug resistant epilepsy, including dietary and surgical therapies. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the APRN will provide care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. We strive for our APRNs to work to the top of their license, education, and experience with the support of the team and their collaborative physician.

  • In the inpatient setting at both our Adele and Kansas campuses, APRNs will support children and their families admitted for prolonged EEGs as well as ketogenic diet initiations. This includes children admitted for evaluation of possible seizure events as well as children undergoing invasive monitoring for surgical resection.  In our team structure, APRNS provide direct patient management which includes participation in patient rounds, ordering/interpreting laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures, analyzing and prioritizing complex data, developing differential diagnoses, and implementing plans of care. These tasks will be completed in direct collaboration with an epileptologist.  Weekend coverage is rotated amongst team members.  There is no call or night coverage for this position
  • In the outpatient setting, APRNs will independently see children with epilepsy or related diagnosis (febrile seizure, first time seizure, rule out seizure) and manage their long term care. This includes referral and management of dietary therapies, surgical recommendations, neuromodulation, and polypharmacy. This population exhibits a broad range of medical complexity and Epilepsy APRNs are vital in early assessment, identification, diagnosis, and referral of common co-morbid conditions.

We strive to support the professional development of our APRNS including offering ongoing education, identification of appropriate outside educational opportunities, and, when appropriate, gradually increased patient complexity. We are looking for candidates who have a passion for neurology, lifelong learning, and partnering with an interdisciplinary team and our families to provide the best patient outcomes for those struggling with epilepsy.

At Children’s Mercy, we are committed to ensuring that everyone feels welcomed within our walls. A successful candidate for this position will join us as we strive to create a workplace that reflects the community we serve, as well as our core values of kindness, curiosity, inclusion, team and integrity.

Additionally, it’s important to us that we remain transparent with all potential job candidates. Because we value the safety of the patients and families we serve, as well as the Children’s Mercy staff, we want to let you know that the seasonal influenza and COVID-19 vaccines are a condition of employment for all employees in our organization.
